이번 시간에는 미드나 일상생활에서 자주 쓰이는 세 가지 표현 "the grass is always greener, come by, hit it off"을 알아보겠습니다. 바로 시작해볼까요?

 

1. the grass is always greener (on the other side)

Cambridge: something that you say that means that other people always seem to be in a better situation than you, although they may not be

이 속담은 "The grass is always greener in the other Fellow's Yard"라는 노래에서 유래되었습니다.

 

▷ Well, the grass is always greener.

남의 떡이 더 커 보이는 법이죠 뭐

 

 

2. come by: 힘쓴 끝에) ~을 얻다, 구하다

Longman:to manage to get something that is rare or difficult to get

come by는 "~에 들르다"라는 표현도 있지만 이번 시간에는 힘들게 무엇을 얻는(obtain, acquire) 다는 의미로 쓰이는 경우를 알아보겠습니다.

 

 

▷ Sugar was hard to come by.

설탕은 구하기 힘들었어

 

▷ How did you come by this sword?

이 검을 어떻게 구한 거지?

 

3. hit it off: 죽이 맞다

Longman: if two people hit it off, they like each other as soon as they meet

보통 같은 관심사나 취미, 목표, 태도 따위를 공유하는 사람들끼리 만나자마자 죽이 잘 맞는다는 의미로 사용됩니다. 

 

▷ we immediately hit it off

우리는 곧바로 죽이 잘 맞았어

 

▷ We just hit it off, that's all.

그냥 죽이 잘 맞았어요. 그게 다예요.
