이 시간 실생활에서 너무 자주 쓰이는 figure out과 find out의 차이점에 대해서 간략하게 설명드리겠습니다. 사전적 의미를 살펴보면 '~을 이해하다, 알아내다'로 의미가 비슷한데요. 어떤 차이가 있을까요?

 

□ 차이점 : 내부 사고 과정(Process) vs 외부 정보(information) 

 

1. Figure out

Collins:If you figure out a solution to a problem or the reason for something, you succeed in solving it or understanding it

Longman:to think about a problem or situation until you find the answer or understand what has happened

 

영영 사전을 참고해보면, figure out은 어떤 문제나 이유에 대한 해결책을 찾기 위해 사고의 과정(thinking process)을 거칩니다.

 

2. Find out

Collins:If you find something out, you learn something that you did not already know, especially by making a deliberate effort to do so.

Longman:to get information, after trying to discover it or by chance

 

 

반면에, find out은 몰랐던 사실에 관한 정보(information)를 얻을 때, 노력을 통해 발견(discover)하거나 우연히 알게(find)됩니다.

예문 1)

I wanted to find out what is the best Korean restaurant in that area, so we looked on the computer.

and we tried to figure out how we could get to the restaurant on time. Because the restaurant had a lunch special until 3:00

그 지역 최고의 한국 식당이 어딘지 알고 싶어서 컴퓨터를 봤어. 그리고 어떻게 시간 맞춰 갈 수 있을까 생각해봤어. 왜냐하면 점심특선이 있었거든.

 

 

예문 2)

I'm going to find out where my pen got lost

어디서 펜을 잃어버렸는지 찾아봐야겠어(= 외부에서 오는 specific 한 정보)

I'm going to figure out why my pen got lost. Did I leave it on the counter? anyway, I'm going to figure out that process

어쩌다 펜을 잃어버렸는지 생각해봐야겠어. 카운터에 놓고 왔나? 어쩃든, 잃어버린 과정을 생각해봐야지(= 머릿속에서 일어나는 사고 과정)
