"encompass, fishy, snoop around" - 수상한데..
이번 시간에는 일상생활이나 미드에서 자주 접하는 세 가지 표현 "encompass, fishy, snoop around"을 알아보겠습니다. 바로 시작해볼까요?
1. encompass : 아우르다
Longman: to include a wide range of ideas, subjects, etc
한국어에서 풍기는 뉘앙스처럼 폭넓게(a wide range) 포함한다는 의미에서 사용합니다. 부정문에서 쓰이면 그 뉘앙스를 더 느낄 수 있죠.
▷ We encompass all needs.
우리는 모든 필요 사항들을 갖추고 있습니다.
▷ My database does not encompass the dynamics of human pair bonding.
내가 가진 데이터로는 동적인 인간 짝짓기를 아우르지 못한다.
▷ A fuck-up doesn't even begin to encompass what they did to me.
조졌다는 말로는 그들이 나에게 한 짓을 다 표현하지도 못해.
2. fishy : 수상한
Collins: If you describe a situation as fishy, you feel that someone is not telling the truth or behaving completely honestly.
일종의 거짓말로 자신을 낚으려는 느낌이 들 때 사용하는 표현입니다.
▷ That looked fishy.
저거 수상해 보였어.
▷ Something smells fishy.
뭔가 수상한 냄새가 나
▷ Something's fishy about this.
여기에 뭔가 수상쩍은 게 있어요.
3. snoop : 염탐하다, 기웃거리다
Longman: to try to find out about someone’s private affairs by secretly looking in their house, examining their possessions etc
누군가의 집이나 소유물을 몰래 보면서 사적인 정보를 캐내려는 의미로 사용됩니다.
▷you snoop on me?
너 나 염탐한 거야?
▷ I'll snoop around the docks.
부두를 염탐해보지
▷ No one's gonna snoop around a nuclear reactor.
누구도 원자로에 기웃거리지 못한다.
