오늘은 situation과 circumstance의 차이점을 배워보도록 하겠습니다.

 

사전적 의미로는 상황, 환경으로 두 단어 비슷해 차이점을 구분하기가 어렵습니다.

□ 차이점

 

1. situation

- Collins : You use situation to refer generally to what is happening in a particular place at a particular time, or to refer to what is happening to you

- Cambridge: the set of things that are happening and the conditions that exist at a particular time and place

- Longman : a combination of all the things that are happening and all the conditions that exist at a particular time in a particular place

 

2. circumstance

- Collins : The circumstances of a particular situation are the conditions which affect what happens.

- Cambridge: a fact or event that makes a situation the way it is

- Longman : the conditions that affect a situation, action, event

 

 

 

영영 사전을 보니 차이점이 보이시나요? situation과 circumstance를 문자 그대로만 봐도 situation은 '장소'를 circumstance는 '주변에 있는 것'을 의미합니다.

 

분명히 말하자면, situation은 특정한 장소, 시간에 발생한 '전반적 상황'을 의미합니다. circumstance는 그 상황과 관련된 주변 조건과 상태를 의미합니다

 

예를 들면, '자동차 사고가 발생했다(situation). 사람들이 다치고(circumstance1) 자동차가 손상되었다(circumstance2)'로 표현할 수 있습니다.

 

 

의미를 더 확장해보면, 상황에 대한 나의 영향력에서도 차이가 있습니다. 통제할 수 있는가와 없는가의 문제입니다.

 

예를 들면, 항해 도중 조난을 당해 정신을 잃고 눈을 떠보니 섬에 있는 situation입니다. 하늘에는 먹구름이 밀려오고 바람은 거세게 불고 있는 circumstance입니다. 날씨는 내가 어찌할 수 없는 환경입니다. 하지만 situation은 다릅니다. 섬에서 살아남기 위해 음식과 물, 거처를 찾고 벗어나기 위해 재난 신호를 보낼 수 있습니다.

 

 

환경을 탓하기보다 상황을 바꿔나가는 노력이 현명할 것입니다.
