"빈말을 하다" 영어로?

이번 시간에는 일상생활이나 미드에서 자주 접하는 표현 세 가지 "empty promise, walk-in business, come through"을 알아보겠습니다. 바로 시작해볼까요?

 

1. empty promise : 빈말

idioms.thefreedictionary: A promise that is devoid of worth or meaning, one that cannot or was never intended to be carried out

말 그대로 직역하면 텅 빈 약속인 것처럼 아무 의미나 가치 없는 말을 뜻합니다.

 

▷ That sounds like an empty promise.

빈말로 들리는데

의미 없는 제스처라도 취해봐요

 

2. a walk in business/clinic/centre: 예약이 필요 없는 가게/진료소/센터

Longman: a business, doctor’s office etc that you can use or go to without having previously arranged a time to do this

여긴 아무 때나 올 수 있는 진료소가 아니야!

 

3. come through

1) (정보, 소식) 들어오다, 도착하다

Collins: If something comes through, it arrives, especially after some procedure has been carried out.

특정 절차를 걸쳐 정보나 소식이 들어올 때 사용합니다.

 

▷ Paperwork's come through.

서류가 도착했습니다.

 

2) 회복하다, 살아남다

Longman: come through (something) to continue to live, be strong, or succeed after a difficult or dangerous time

힘든 시간을 이겨내고 계속해서 살아남거나 회복하는 것을 의미합니다.

 

▷ we come through this, I promise

우리는 이겨낼 거야, 약속해.

 

3) (약속을) 이행하다

Collins: If you come through with what is expected or needed from you, you succeed in doing or providing it

자신의 해야 할 일을 성공적으로 해냈을 때 사용합니다.

 

▷ Good. She really came through in the end.

좋아. 그녀는 정말로 결국에 해냈어.
