이번 시간에는 way, method, approach, means, manner의 차이점을 알아보겠습니다.

 

□ 차이점

way, method, approach, means, manner 모두 '방법, 수단'을 나타내지만 쓰임에서 미묘한 차이점이 존재합니다.

 

1. way

Oxford:a method, style or manner of doing something

way는 길에서 유래하여 '방법, 수단'을 의미하는 가장 일반적인 단어입니다.  

 

▷ It's the only way

그것이 유일한 방법이다

 

2. method

Longman:a planned way of doing something, especially one that a lot of people know about and use

method는 많은 사람들이 알고 사용하는 체계적인 '방법, 수단'을 의미합니다.

 

▷ My teaching methods are fairly unique

내 교수법은 꽤 독특하다

 

3. approach

Longman: a method of doing something or dealing with a problem

approach는 무언가를 해결하거나 생각할 때 접근하는 방법으로 '처리 방법, 접근법'을 의미합니다.

 

▷ Okay, okay, look, maybe we need a new approach

좋아, 좋아, 새로운 접근법이 필요할지도 몰라

 

 

4. means

Oxford:an action, an object or a system by which a result is achieved; a way of achieving or doing something

means는 무언가를 달성하고 일을 하기 위한 '수단, 방법'을 의미합니다.

 

▷ You have no means of communication with the outside world?

바깥세상과 소통할 방법이 없다고요?

 

5. manner

Collins:If something is done in the manner of something else, it is done in the style of that thing

manner는 격식체로 일이 진행되는 '방식'을 의미합니다

 

▷ In a professional manner... Professionally

전문적인 방식으로... 프로페셔널하게
