ability, capability, capacity는 능력이라는 중심 의미에서 약간의 미묘한 차이를 갖고 있습니다. 무 자르듯 의미를 구분하기는 어렵지만 각 단어별로 갖는 특징들을 알아보겠습니다.

 

 

□ ability = 능력

Collins :Your ability to do something is the fact that you can do it

Longman : the state of being able to do something

 

▷ They’ll examine your ability to pay

그들은 네가 지불할 능력이 있는지 조사할 거야

▷ He was a man of exceptional ability

그는 특출 난 능력을 가진 남자였다

 

ability는 'the quality or state of being able to perform' 즉, (육체적이든 정신적이든, 선천적이든 후천적이든) 이미 지니고 있는 실질적 능력을 의미합니다

 

 

□ capability = 능력

Collins : If you have the capability or the capabilities to do something, you have the ability or the qualities that are necessary to do it

 

▷ The job is beyond my capabilities.
그 직업은 내 능력 밖이다
▷These tests are beyond the capability of an average twelve-year-old

이 테스트는 평균 12 세 어린이의 능력을 뛰어넘습니다

 

capability는 (특정 목적을 수행하기에 적합한) 능력을 의미합니다. 주로 ability의 최고치를 나타내어 양자택일의 제안을 할 때 사용되는 경향이 있습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

□ capacity = 용량, 능력

Cambridge : the total amount that can be contained or produced

▷ The stadium’s seating capacity

경기장의 좌석 수

Collins : Your capacity for something is your ability to do it, or the amount of it that you are able to do

▷ Their intellectual capacities have begun to fill

그들의 지적 능력이 채워지기 시작했다

 

capacity는 1) (용기, 공간 등..) 부피와 용량을 의미하거나 2) (선천적으로 타고난 잠재력을 지닌 정신적) 능력을 의미합니다.

 

 

ability, capability, capacity의 차이점을 설명할 때, 글쓰기 예시를 많이 사용합니다.

 

글을 쓰는 능력(ability)이 있지만 소설을 쓸 능력(capability)은 없다. 하지만 재능 있는 작가로서 소설을 쓸 수 있는 능력(capacity)은 있다.
