이번 시간에는 believe, think, suppose, guess, assume의 차이점을 알아보겠습니다.

 

□ 차이점

believe, think, suppose, guess, assume은 모두 어떤 명제에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 나타냅니다. 이 태도는 동사에 따라 정도면에서 차이가 있습니다.

 

1. believe

Longman:to think that something is true or possible, although you are not completely sure

believe는 (화자가 확실하다고 생각하진 않지만, 명제가 사실일 거라는 가능성을 가지고) '생각하다, 여기다'를 의미합니다. think보다 명제에 대한 긍정성이 높습니다.

 

▷ I believe he should be dismissed

저는 그가 해고되어야 한다고 생각합니다

 

2. think

Collins:If you say that you think that something is true or will happen, you mean that you have the impression that it is true or will happen, although you are not certain of the facts

think는 (화자가 명제에 대해 갖는 인상, 의견으로) '생각하다'를 의미합니다. 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 표현입니다.

 

▷ I think I remember you

나는 당신을 기억하는 것 같아요

 

3. suppose

Longman: to think that something is probably true, based on what you know

Cambridge:used to show that you think something is true, although you wish that it were not

suppose는 (알고 있는 지식에 근거하여 명제가 사실일 거라는 가능성을 가지고) '생각하다, 추정하다'를 의미합니다. 화자가 사실이기를 바라지 않는 명제에 자주 쓰입니다.

 

 

▷ Do you suppose she knows?

당신은 그녀가 알고 있다고 생각하나요?

 

 

 

4. guess

Longman:to try to answer a question or form an opinion when you are not sure whether you will be correct

Collins:If you guess something, you give an answer or provide an opinion which may not be true because you do not have definite knowledge about the matter concerned

guess는 (화자가 명제와 관련된 불확실한 지식을 근거하여 의견과 생각을 만들고자 시도하는 과정 중 어림잡아 이럴 것이다) '추측하다, 짐작하다'를 의미합니다.

 

▷ Yeah, I guess, I guess it is

네, 그런 것 같아요

 

5. assume

Cambridge:to accept something to be true without question or proof

assume은 (근거나 질문 없이 명제가 사실일 거라) '추정하다, 상정하다, 가정하다'를 의미합니다.

 

 

 

▷ I assume you haven't done it

나는 당신이 그것을 하지 않았다고 가정한다
