이번 시간에는 persuade, convince, assure, urge, entice의 차이점을 알아보겠습니다.

 

□ 차이점

 

1. persuade

Oxford:to make somebody do something by giving them good reasons for doing it

persuade는 상대편이 이쪽 편의 이야기를 따르도록 여러 가지로 깨우쳐 말하는 '설득하다'를 의미합니다.

 

 

▷I will continue to persuade them to change their minds

나는 그들이 마음을 바꾸도록 계속 설득할 것이다

 

2. convince

Collins:If someone or something convinces you of something, they make you believe that it is true or that it exists

convince는 무엇이 확실한 사실이고 존재함을 상대방에게 '설득하다, 확신시키다, 납득시키다'를 의미합니다 

 

▷ I must convince her of this

난 그녀에게 이걸 설득해야 해

 

3. assure

Cambridge:to tell someone confidently that something is true, especially so that they do not worry

assure은 상대방이 걱정하지 않도록 자신 있게(confidently) 무엇이 사실임을 '장담하다, 확언하다, 보장하다'를 의미합니다.

 

▷ Perfectly safe, I assure you

완벽하게 안전해, 내가 장담해

4. urge

Cambridge:to strongly advise or try to persuade someone to do a particular thing

urge는 어떤 특정한 일을 하도록 강력히(strongly) '설득하다, 권고하다'를 의미합니다.

 

▷ I urge you to reconsider

다시 한번 생각해 봐주시기 바랍니다

 

5. entice

Longman:to persuade someone to do something or go somewhere, usually by offering them something that they want

entice는 상대방이 원하는 것을 제공함으로써 어떤 행동을 하도록 '꾀다, 유인하다'를 의미합니다.

 

▷ All right. Maybe this will entice you

좋아. 이걸 보면 아마 생각이 달라질 거야
